FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: June 9, 2009

City notifies vacant property owners of code violations

In a continuing effort to address City of Kansas City, Mo., code violations involving tall weeds, trash, and debris, the City is releasing a general notification of violation to owners of vacant lots and vacant properties in an effort to gain voluntary compliance. Per Kansas City Ordinance 48-63 the Director of Neighborhood and Community Services may issue such a notice. This section states:

(b) The director may publish notices before and during the months of April through October to remind owners of vacant land and unoccupied property of their responsibility to mow the property at a frequency sufficient to prevent the growth of rank weeds as defined in 48-1. The director may then order rank weeds that are found on vacant land and unoccupied property during that period to be mowed with the costs assessed against to the owner as provided in 48-66, special assessment of abatement costs.

Properties that are not in compliance will be mowed and cleared of debris without further notice. The costs, which average $300 -$500, of this action will be assessed against the property as a special tax assessment.

Residents who wish to file a complaint about a property with tall weeds or debris are encouraged to contact the Action Center at 311 or 513-1313.

As our efforts continue we need help from the community to address these violations.

For additional information please contact Nate Pare, Manager of Neighborhood Preservation, at (816) 513-9018.
