12th Street Bridge load limit revised to 15 tons

The City of Kansas City, Mo., Public Works Department is alerting motorists that loads on the 12th Street Bridge are now limited to a weight of 15 tons or less. The decision to revise the load limit was made after a routine structural inspection.

The revised load limits will remain in effect until the bridge has been refurbished to a level that will safely permit the transport of heavier loads. The 15-ton limit exceeds the weight of most automobiles and light trucks.

The 12th Street Bridge is currently in the third and final phase of a construction project designed to refurbish the structure. The work, being managed by the City’s Capital Improvements Management Office, began in 2004 and is estimated to be complete by fall of 2010.

Media inquiries and other requests for more information about this load limit revision should be directed to Dennis Gagnon, public information officer for the Public Works Department, (816) 513-2659.

Requests for information about the 12th Street Bridge construction project should be directed to Sean Demory, communications specialist for the Capital Improvements Management Office, (816) 513-0059.
