City responds to hazardous materials incident on Paseo Bridge

The City of Kansas City, Mo., Emergency Operations Center activated at approximately 7:30 a.m. Nov. 30 in response to a tractor trailer carrying hydrochloric acid that overturned in the northbound lane just south of the Paseo Bridge.

Representatives of the Public Works, Police, Fire, Water Services, and City Manager's departments and MAST responded to the EOC to coordinate the City's emergency response efforts.

Kansas City, Mo., Fire Department Hazardous Materials companies worked to neutralize the acid and the resulting vapor with soda ash and dirt.

A few persons were transported to area hospitals or treated at the scene for minor injuries.

During the incident, persons at the Isle of Capri Casino were kept inside the building, while employees at Batliner Paper Company self evacuated.

Persons outside the immediate area of the spill who might have breathed the vapor could have experienced some burning of the eyes, nose, lip, and throat, but no serious health threats were posed to these individuals or to the general public.

The KCFD HazMat companies and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency representatives are conducting air monitoring. Missouri Department of Natural Resources representatives also have been on the scene.

Fire companies used a high loader and sand from the construction area to build a dike that has prevented or significantly limited any flow into storm sewers.

By approximately 9:10 a.m., most of the hydrochloric acid flow from the tanker had ceased, except for a minor leak. The Kansas City Fire Department incident commander declared the situation under control.

The vapor plume has dissipated and cleanup in the area of the incident is underway. Businesses that were impacted by the incident are reopening.

The City's EOC deactivated at 9:35 a.m.
