Innovative art piece installed on City parking structure

An eye-catching public art piece is keeping watch over downtown Kansas City.

Red Eye, an abstract mural by California-based artist Gordon Huether, adorns the entry to the City-owned parking facility, which is part of J.E. Dunn’s new headquarters in downtown’s East Village, on 11th street, between Locust and Cherry streets.

The public art project was funded by the City of Kansas City, Mo., One Percent for Art program, which, by ordinance, sets-aside one percent of all municipal construction and renovation budgets for the inclusion of unique artwork. The One Percent for Art program is coordinated by the Municipal Art Commission.

An independent panel selected Huether from more than 60 artists from across the United States in part due to his extensive experience in dealing similar challenges. Huether painted an abstract mural on the garage and inserted an oval-shaped red window in the metal structure to create a red sunlit aura inside the garage during the day and an impromptu street side light show at night with help from the headlights on exiting vehicles.

“The red ‘eye’ references moving tail lights which are, as anyone who’s left a busy parking garage knows, what you see on the way out,” Huether said. “The giant abstract painting identifies the public portal to the garage and keeps an eye on the inside of the garage and the neighborhood outside.”

Media inquiries should be directed to Sean Demory, communications manager for the capital improvement management office, (816) 513-0059.
