Seasonal flu vaccine available at the Health Department
Health Department urges early seasonal flu vaccination
The City of Kansas City, Mo., Health Department is now offering seasonal flu shots. Adults and children age 3 and up can get their flu shots at the Health Department, 2400 Troost Ave., during regular clinic hours from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, from 8 a.m. to noon on Thursday. The clinic is closed over lunchtime.
At this time, the Health Department has not yet received preservative-free vaccine for small children, or vaccines for the H1N1 flu. Limited vaccines for pregnant women are currently available. FluMist, a nasal spray vaccine, is available for those age 18 and up.
“With many vaccines, sometimes there is a limited supply,” said Dr. Rex Archer, director of the Health Department. “We have the seasonal flu vaccine available now, and we urge people to get vaccinated while it is still available.”
The Health Department will bill Medicare Part A or B or Missouri Medicaid on behalf of those who are eligible and show proof of coverage. Anyone not eligible for these programs will be charged $20; cash and credit cards only will be accepted for payment during the regular clinics. Those with other insurance providers that cover flu vaccination will need to work with their provider for reimbursement.
Getting a flu shot is the best way to prevent the seasonal flu or decrease the length and severity of symptoms. Those who are vaccinated from the flu are far less likely to spread the flu to their family and friends. However, getting the seasonal flu shot this year will not protect against H1N1, formerly known as swine flu, so people will need to get the H1N1 vaccine when it becomes available.
