City appoints manager of Regulated Industries Division

Gary R. Majors has been appointed manager of the City of Kansas City, Mo., Regulated Industries Division of the Neighborhood and Community Services Department. Majors will begin his duties Sept. 17.

"I am excited to bring Gary into the department as the manager of the Regulated Industries Division," said Les Washington, director of the Neighborhood and Community Services Department. "A key component of having healthy, safe neighborhoods is to make sure that good businesses continue to thrive and meet standards set by our ordinances. With Gary in this position, I am confident we will have continued success in meeting these standards."

Majors has worked for the Kansas City, Mo., Police Department since 1980. He made a steady progression through the rank structure and attained the upper management position of division commander and the rank of major. Since December 2004, Majors was assigned to the Central Patrol Division as its commander.

In his new position, Majors will be responsible for administering the ordinances and laws pertaining to the sale, consumption and storage of alcoholic beverages; commercial amusement centers; adult entertainment; taxicabs; and other related ventures. He also will be responsible for scheduling and presiding at hearings resulting from violations of applicable ordinances and adjudicates; and defending the actions of the Regulated Industries Division before the Liquor Control Board of Review and in court.

His background includes serving as major of the Facilities Management Division (June 2002 to December 2004); captain of the Budget Preparation and Control Unit (March 1997 to June 2002); captain of the Violent Crimes Division and commander of the Robbery Unit (January 1996 to March 1997); captain of the Traffic Unit (November 1994 to January 1996); captain of the Tactical Response Unit (May 1993 to November 1994); and captain of the Patrol Bureau and watch commander (April 1992 to May 1993).

Majors has a bachelor's degree in criminal justice administration from Park University. He also is a graduate of the Senior Management Institute for Police and the FBI National Academy.
