FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: July 8, 2009
12th Street Viaduct and Beardsley Road reopen
The City of Kansas City, Mo., is alerting residents that emergency repairs to the 12th Street viaduct have been completed several weeks ahead of schedule and City crews have reopened the bridge and Beardsley Road.
In May, Missouri Department of Transportation inspectors found extensive deterioration on the bridge during a routine inspection of the structure. In order to ensure the safety of the traveling public, the 12th Street Viaduct was closed and Beardsley Road was closed between Bluff and 17th streets to provide a staging area for the repairs.
The City’s Capital Improvements Management Office was overseeing renovation of the 12th Street Viaduct at the time of the closure and managed the repair process for the Public Works Department. City staff and the contractor originally anticipated a late July opening, but worked to shorten the construction schedule.
Two lanes of the 12th Street Viaduct will remain open to traffic until renovation is complete. Full completion of the 12th Street Viaduct renovation is scheduled for fall 2010.
Media inquiries about the closure or the 12th Street Viaduct project should be directed to Sean Demory, communications manager for the Capital Improvements Management Office, (816) 513-0059.
