City receives $2.37 million in stimulus funding for CDBG program

Public input sought on allocation priorities

The City of Kansas City, Mo., Housing and Community Development Department recently received $2.37 million in new funding from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program. The funding is part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

The fund allocation will operate similar to the annual CDBG process, and the new funding will be dispensed among already received submittals to the 2009 Consolidated Plan Request for Proposal to expedite distribution.

“We weren’t able to fund a number of very good programs with the standard CDBG allocation, so this supplementary funding will allow us to put some of these projects into action, which will put people to work and improve our community,” said Shirley Winn, acting director of the Housing and Community Development Department.

The City’s Housing Committee will hear public testimony regarding the use of the funds at its May 27 meeting. The hearing starts at noon on the 10th floor of City Hall, 414 E. 12th St. Residents may sign up to provide public testimony by calling the Department of Housing and Community Development at (816) 513-3036.

Residents also may submit comments via e-mail to sarah_cecil @kcmo.org with the subject line “My Input on CDBG-R.” Comments also may be faxed to (816) 513-2808 or mailed to: Attention of Sarah Cecil, City Hall, 414 E. 12th St., Kansas City, MO 64106. Comments will be accepted from May 22–28, 2009.

“In exploring possible uses of these funds, our goal is to have as open and transparent process as is possible,” said Sharon Sanders Brooks, City Coucilwoman, 3rd District, and chairwoman of the Housing Committee. “We will be selecting from the CDBG projects previously submitted, but there is a lot of room for flexibility among those projects and that is where we hope public input helps provide direction.”

An City draft of fund allocation is available here.
