FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: March 4, 2009

Next phase of East Village project to start later this month

The City of Kansas City, Mo., Capital Improvements Management Office, a division of the City Manager’s Office, has issued a notice to proceed on the next phase of the East Village downtown revitalization project. The $1.6 million acquisition, remediation and demolition of the ReStart Inc., building at 601 E. 11th St. is expected to start later this month and be completed in late spring or early summer.

The work will start with abatement and will continue for several months before the actual demolition takes place. The demolition is estimated to take two months and will necessitate the closure of one lane on 11th Street between Holmes and Cherry streets.

“We are very excited to see this project moving forward,” City Manager Wayne A. Cauthen said. “This demolition will open up valuable property and allow the East Village project to continue to progress and improve the aesthetics and economics of the area.”

The East Village revitalization project is a $340 million redevelopment plan that will transform 12 blocks of scattered buildings and underutilized surface parking lots into a mixed-use neighborhood combining retail, housing and office space anchored by J.E. Dunn Construction Co’s new headquarters.

All construction and demolition work will continue as long as the weather permits. Drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians are reminded to use caution in areas adjacent to active construction sites.

Media inquiries about this project should be directed to Sean Demory, Capital Improvements Management Office, (816) 513-0059.
