City reaches tentative agreement with Local 500 labor union

The City of Kansas City, Mo., and the AFSCME Local 500 labor union have reached on July 25 a tentative settlement on a three-year work agreement. The agreement continues a variable pay program that compensates 1,800 of the City’s general laboring, trades, clerical and skilled trades employees. The package is not final until union members ratify the deal and the City Council approves it.

Negotiations began in May 2007 and reached a breakthrough recently when the parties agreed on a $1,200 cash reward for most senior employees who are not entitled to a base pay increase.

Additionally, the new agreement includes:

- An additional vacation day for employees with more than 20 years of continuous service
- An additional floating holiday
- A 1.75 percent market-based adjustment to the minimum pay scales
- A 1 percent market-based adjustment to the maximum pay scales
- A 0.50-1 percent team award based on improvement in the City Auditor’s Citizen Satisfaction Survey.

Under the new agreement, employees also can receive a 1 percent award for attaining sick leave standards, 0.50 percent for safety or customer service, 0.50 percent for cross-training and 0.25 percent for exceeding expectations.
