City to celebrate three sister city anniversaries July 17

Ceremony is part of three-day Sister Cities International Conference

The City of Kansas City, Mo., will honor three of its sister city partnerships for reaching milestone anniversaries at the Mayor’s Reception event of the Sister Cities International Conference at 6:30 p.m. on July 17 at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. The Sister Cities International Conference is being held in Kansas City, Mo., from July 16-19.

Anniversary honorees include Ramle, Israel for 10 years of partnership, Tainan City, Taiwan for 30 years of partnership and Morelia, Mexico for 35 years of partnership.

At the event, Mayor Mark Funkhouser will sign a renewal of commitment for the three sister cities. The event also will feature Mary Eisenhower, president and CEO of People to People International, Don Hall Jr., president and CEO of Hallmark Cards, and current and former mayors from the Kansas City area.

The 2008 Sister Cities International conference will bring more than 600 people, including 100 youth, from 40 states and more than 20 countries to Kansas City, Mo., from July 16-19.

Conference participants include sister city supporters and leaders, elected government officials, corporate executives and community activists from around the world. The 2008 conference, “Sustainable Peace through Livable Communities,” will address widespread environmental issues that are common causes of conflict over resources and global warming.
