Power & Light District visitors connect to free Wi-Fi service

Patrons of the Power & Light District are taking advantage of the free Wi-Fi Internet service implemented recently by the City of Kansas City, Mo. The service was activated in March and the City has seen a steady increase in usage since then.

“During large events at Sprint Center or the Convention Center, we are seeing up to 300 concurrent users on a regular basis,” said David Evans, telecommunications manager for the City’s Information Technology Department. “Daily use continues to grow as people are discovering the service.”

The free service is available primarily in the entertainment district’s public spaces and outdoor eating areas, bounded by 12th Street to the north, Truman Road to the south, Baltimore Avenue to the west and Grand Boulevard to the east.

“The idea was to help draw people to the KC Live District,” said Ivan Drinks, the city’s chief information officer. “The Wi-Fi network helps conventioneers stay connected while eating or relaxing in the area. It lets people get sports scores and news while they’re watching entertainment in the district and it helps the news media when they cover KC Live events.”

The City’s Capital Improvements Management Office, a division of the City Manager’s Office, managed the project, the Information Technology Department designed the service and provided Internet connectivity and World Wide Technologies, a contractor, handled the actual installation.

Media inquiries should be directed to Sean Demory, communications specialist in the Capital Improvements Management Office, (816) 513-0059.
