City projects receive design-build awards

Two projects managed by the Capital Improvements Management Office, the Fire Department’s Fire Station No. 14 and the Police Department’s Shoal Creek Patrol Station, received awards from the Mid-America chapter of the Design-Build Institute of America.

Fire Station No. 14, which opened October 2006, garnered the top prize in the public sector projects under $15 million category. The Shoal Creek station, which opened in December 2006, won the merit award in the same category.

According to the Design-Build Institute of America’s Web site, “Award winners exemplify the principles of interdisciplinary teamwork, innovation and problem-solving that characterize design-build delivery, often breaking new ground in their approach and accomplishment.”

Design-build is a method that emphasizes teamwork. It speeds up a project’s construction process by allowing the project’s designers, consultants and contractor to be part of an integrated team.

Team members for the Shoal Creek station include the City of Kansas City, Mo., Titan Construction Organization Inc., GossenLivingston Architecture and the Police Department. The Fire Station No. 14 team included the City, JE Dunn Construction, Hoefer Wysocki Architects and the Fire Department.

Eric Bosch, manager of architecture for the Capital Improvements Management Office, accepted the award on behalf of the City.

“The Shoal Creek Patrol Station and Fire Station No. 14 exemplify innovative design and quality construction,” Bosch said. “The people of Kansas City should be proud.”
