Sprint Center art installation dedication to be Oct. 10

Representatives from the City of Kansas City, Mo., area leaders and Sprint Center staff will dedicate “The Moons” multimedia art project at a ceremony Oct. 10 at 6 p.m. outside Sprint Center near the intersection of Grand Boulevard and Truman Road. Members of the community are invited to the dedication ceremony.

Chris Doyle, a New York-based artist known for his public artwork, created the project and will attend the ceremony.

The dedication is part of a larger grand opening celebration, which also will be held at Sprint Center on Oct. 10 from 10:10 a.m. to 10:10 p.m.

The installation consists of three landscaped “islands” featuring native plants, grasses and shallow pools. Suspended over each island is a “moon” (a ten-foot-tall circular LED video screen) depicting more than 600 city residents “flying.” The displays will be on 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The piece was created to comply with the City’s One Percent for Art Program, which is administered by the City’s Municipal Art Commission. This program stipulates that one percent of construction costs for municipal buildings be set aside for public art enhancements. A panel of City staff, Sprint Center representatives, community representatives and art professionals selected Doyle from more than 160 applicants.
