FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Sept. 28, 2007

23rd Street Viaduct temporarily reopens

The 23rd Street Viaduct and American Royal Drive has been temporarily reopened and will remain open until late December. After December, the viaduct will be closed again until summer 2008. During the time the bridge is temporarily open, vehicles weighing 5 tons or more are prohibited from driving on the bridge.

The reopening of the bridge, which originally closed in April, will accommodate the large number of workers and business patrons in the Central Industrial District, as well as serving as an entryway for visitors during the American Royal.

Age and constant wear have made the repair of the bridge, which extends into the Central Industrial District, a priority for several years. The current $11.2 million plan will allow a full renovation of the structure.

The current project will continue to rehabilitate the 23rd Street Viaduct and American Royal Drive. The portion of the bridge over the railroad will be replaced and roadway barriers will be installed. Repairs and rehabilitation will be undertaken to address wear and tear on the bridge’s superstructure, bearings and substructure.

Earlier this year, work crews demolished the Wyoming Street ramp. This structure will not be replaced.

All construction and repair work is done as long as the weather permits. Drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians are reminded to use caution in areas adjacent to active construction sites. Conditions in these areas can change rapidly, which may expose people to unexpected dangerous situations.

Media inquiries about this issue should be directed to Sean Demory, communications specialist in the Capital Improvements Management Office, (816) 513-0059.
