Task Force to hold final meeting on economic development policy

The City of Kansas City, Mo., Economic Development and Incentive Policy Task Force will hold its final meeting at 5 p.m. on Aug. 29 at St. James Lutheran Church, 1104 N.E. Vivion Road.

For the past eight weeks, the 20-member Task Force, which was appointed by Mayor Mark Funkhouser, has been working with a consulting team to develop recommendations for an economic development and incentive policy. This effort was initiated as a result of a new requirement in the charter for the City that was adopted Aug. 6, 2006.

In an introductory letter providing direction to the Task Force, Mayor Funkhouser asked the group to address three questions: 1) What do we want to achieve with incentives; 2) When do we want to use incentives; and 3) Who will be responsible for measuring the results.

“I’m enormously grateful to the members of the Task Force for the hard work they’ve been doing for the last several months,” Mayor Funkhouser said. “I have been receiving updates on their progress. I’m impressed with what they’ve accomplished, and I’m optimistic that the policy they recommend will be a good one for the City.”

The Task Force, which includes six City Councilmembers, has also relied heavily on public testimony from residents and community stakeholders in the policy development process.

The Task Force is expected to finalize its recommendations by the end of the meeting and deliver the results to the City Council and the mayor by Aug. 30.
