FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: July 12, 2007

Truman Road streetscape construction to start July 16

Construction will begin on the $1.7 million Truman Road corridor streetscape improvement project July 16. This project, which is scheduled to be completed by the end of September, will affect East and West Truman Road and the Interstate 670 overpass bridges from Baltimore Avenue to McGee Street.

The City of Kansas City, Mo., Capital Improvements Management Office and the project's contractor, Mega Industries, will coordinate construction activities with the Missouri Department of Transportation. MoDot is currently completing structural rehabilitation and resurfacing work to the Main Street and the outside lanes of the Grand Boulevard I-670 bridges.

Starting in August, Baltimore and Walnut Streets will be closed to accommodate the continuation of both MoDot and City work. Periodic evening closures of I-670 will be necessary during construction. The City also will require lane and sidewalk reductions on East and West Truman Road during the completion of the Truman Road streetscape project.

This streetscape project is designed to develop the Truman Road corridor into an inviting pedestrian conduit between the Crossroads District and downtown. Improvements will include intersection modifications, additional crosswalk safety features, decorative streetlights and fencing, new curbs and expanded Truman Road sidewalks. HNTB Corporation, the project↓s designer, has also incorporated an extensive landscaping scheme, which will include 90 trees and a line of evergreen shrubs planted along the I-670 south retaining wall.

The City improvement project is just one portion of the existing overhaul of the Truman Road corridor. In addition to the City and MoDot municipal infrastructure improvements, a series of innovative bridge guardrails, designed by local artist Jim Woodfill in partnership with el dorado, inc., will be installed this fall on the Baltimore Avenue, Main Street, Walnut Street and Grand Boulevard bridges.

Media inquiries and other requests for more information about this issue should be directed to Marny Burke, Capital Improvements Management Office, (816) 513-2749.
