FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: July 5, 2007
Public meeting to address the facts and impacts of payday loans
Councilwoman Jan Marcason, 4th District, will moderate a public meeting about the facts and potential effects of payday loans at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, July 10, at Central Presbyterian Church, 3501 Campbell St. (Campbell Street at Armour Boulevard).
The primary purpose of this meeting is to stimulate public discussion of payday loans and address the impact of these loans on the City’s neighborhoods and the quality of life of its residents. Councilwoman Marcason recently introduced a moratorium on granting new licenses for this type of lending institution, which was passed unanimously by the City Council on June 21. The moratorium extended a similar piece of legislation that passed in January 2007.
Members of various social service organizations who have worked on this issue will be present to offer information and insight. Attendees will have the opportunity to contribute to the discussion. Both proponents and opponents of payday loans are encouraged to attend the meeting.
Parking for the meeting will be available in the lot north of the church on Campbell Street. The entrance for the meeting is the door on Campbell Street.
For more information about the meeting, contact Susan Borge, assistant to Councilwoman Marcason, (816) 513-1617 or Judy Hadley, commissioner of revenue, (816) 513-1119.
