KC Recycles exceeds expectations at Rhythm and Ribs Fest
The City of Kansas City, Mo., KC Recycles program achieved a 46 percent diversion rate by recycling 5,480 pounds of the nearly 12,000 pounds of waste generated during the Rhythm and Ribs Jazz and Blues Fest, which was held June 15 and 16 at 18th and Vine. Initial projections called for a 38 percent diversion rate for the event.
"While I'm pleased we hit a 46 percent diversion rate and kept more than two and a half tons of waste from going to the landfill, there's no reason why we can't learn from this event and move the number considerably higher in the future," said Michael Shaw, manager of the Solid Waste Division of the Public Works Department.
The Rhythm and Ribs event marks the first time the City's Solid Waste Division has provided on-site recycling at a major event.
