FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: June 12, 2006

Kansas City, Mo., declared All-America City

Welcome home rally at 2 p.m. at KCI

Kansas City, Mo., was named one of 10 All-America Cities for 2006. City officials who attended the award ceremony will be returning to Kansas City at 2 p.m. today at Kansas City International Airport on a Midwest Airlines flight arriving at Terminal A. A rally will be held when the flight lands. The media and public are invited to attend.

The All-America City Award program, held this year in Anaheim, Calif., is the nation's oldest community recognition effort. The award recognizes communities of all sizes -- including neighborhoods, towns, cities, counties and regions -- that have made major progress in meeting their most important needs.

"We always knew we were an All-America City," said Mayor Kay Barnes. "Now the whole country knows it!"

Members of the Kansas City contingent that made the winning presentation to judges in Anaheim on Sunday included Barnes and City Manager Wayne A. Cauthen.

Featured in Kansas City's presentation were the downtown renaissance; the Westside Community Action Network Center, a neighborhood and community-policing organization; and Operation Breakthrough, the largest single-site child care center in Missouri.

The All-America City Award is America's most prestigious community recognition award. This is Kansas City's fifth time to achieve this honor. The last time Kansas City earned an All-America City Award was in 1994.

Kansas City civic leader Mike Burke lead the effort and formed a committee to showcase the city's recent progress, including specific community improvements that have increased its livability for a diverse population.
