City announces Lead Poisoning Prevention Week activities

The City of Kansas City, Mo., Health Department’s Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention and Healthy Homes Program will recognize National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week from Oct. 20-26 with a variety of free services and activities at the Health Department, 2400 Troost Ave.

Services and activities include:

    Education tables in the Health Department’s atrium.

    Free lead testing of products such as toys, dishes, food, spices, art supplies and jewelry by appointment

    Free blood lead and hemoglobin testing by appointment

    A “mitten exhibit” to promote awareness about the number of Kansas City children affected by lead poisoning

    An appearance by ‘Leady The Dinosaur’ on Monday, Oct. 21 at 9:30 a.m. and Friday, Oct. 25 at 3 p.m.

    A poster contest for local elementary schools to promote lead poisoning prevention.

The Health Department is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

In addition, Health Department nurses will provide blood lead and hemoglobin testing for HeadStart children at Woodland Elementary School on Wed. Oct. 23 and Thurs. Oct. 24.
