Municipal Court announces new public information officer

The City of Kansas City, Mo., is pleased to announce that Benita Jones is the new public information officer for the City's Municipal Court.

Jones is a licensed attorney with a background in the media. She was selected after the Municipal Court conducted a search that yielded a diverse field of candidates.

“We are excited to add Benita to our staff,” said Municipal Court Administrator Megan Fuller Pfannenstiel. “She brings a unique blend of legal and journalistic skills along with enthusiasm for educating the public about the courts. I am confident she will elevate the communication of our message and programs to the community and the media.”

As public information officer, Jones will report to the court administrator and act as a media contact for the Municipal Court. She also will process open records requests, develop internal and external communications, plan events and handle general public relations.

Jones holds a juris doctorate from the University of Missouri -- Kansas City and a Bachelor of Journalism from the University of Missouri -- Columbia.

Jones has eight years of experience as an assistant prosecuting attorney with Jackson County where she worked in the family support and drug units and once led the Drug Abatement Response Team (D.A.R.T.).

Jones also spent 11 years as a reporter with The Kansas City Star where she wrote about crime and public safety, court proceedings and county government. Her writings earned awards from the Kansas City Press Club, the Kansas Press Association, the Heart of America Family Council and the Kansas City Association of Black Journalists. She comes to the City after most recently working for Job News.
