KC Green Fair shows off local green initiatives
Residents encouraged to attend fair on Sept. 19 at Ilus Davis Park

The City of Kansas City, Mo., invites residents to attend its 2013 KC Green Fair on Thursday, Sept. 19 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Ilus Davis Park across the street from City Hall, 414 E. 12th St. The fair will highlight the innovative and sustainable initiatives of City departments and several City partners.

It also will feature food trucks, farmers selling local produce and meat, Eco Elvis and a late afternoon urban garden tour at 18th Street and Broadway Boulevard.

“This year’s fair is all about local food and healthy lifestyles,” said Andy Savastino, the City’s environmental compliance manager. “Participants at the fair will be amazed, and hopefully inspired, by the wide variety of projects, programs and initiatives going on in the Kansas City area.”

The fair will include live demonstrations of green initiatives. Attendees who stop by the KC Green table will receive a free green bag and a “Ticket to Sustainability” that can be entered into prize drawings after visiting 10 exhibit booths.

At 4:30 p.m. visitors are invited to tour 18Broadway at the intersection of 18th Street and Broadway Boulevard, where an urban garden site demonstrates best practices in food production, storm water management and renewable energy. Parking is available along 18th and 19th streets and the alley. Sign up for the tour during the fair at the University of Missouri Extension Booth 15.

In addition to the university and City departments, exhibitors include: The Bike Shop, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Brightergy, Community Emergency Response Team, Door-to-Door Organics, Food Not Lawns, Gillis Growth Grove, Greater Kansas City Food Policy Coalition, Kansas City Community Gardens, Kansas City Power & Light, Kansas City Zoomobile, Stony Crest Urban Farm, The Local Pig, Truman Medical Centers, Urban Harvest and Wolf Creek Family Farm.

Food trucks selling lunch items include the Cajun Cabin, El Tenedor, Indios Carbonsitos, Little Italy and Smokin’ Fresh BBQ.

A short presentation of the KC Green Neighborhood awards will be made around noon.
