City begins outdoor advertising sign inspection process

The City of Kansas City, Mo., City Planning and Development Department has launched a new process to systematically inspect outdoor advertising signs. City staff initiated this process to better regulate the misuse of outdoor advertising signs, which often contribute to community blight. It also will comply with the City’s Zoning and Development Code, which was amended last December to address outdoor advertising signs.

An outdoor advertising sign is considered any sign that directs attention to a business, commodity, service, activity or product that is conducted, sold or offered off of the premises from where the sign is located.

Outdoor advertising signs must be in good condition and free from tears, rust, peeled or cracked paint, faded advertising copy or other deteriorations. In addition, a legal nonconforming sign that remains blank for 90 days or longer is deemed abandoned and no longer legal.

Owners of outdoor advertising signs were required to register their signs before April 8, 2013 without incurring a violation. The owner of any sign not registered or found to be out of compliance with ordinance requirements upon inspection will receive a notice of violation and may be subject to prosecution.

Online registration is available at For more information about the outdoor advertising sign registry and maintenance requirements, see Sec. 88-445-14 & 15 of the City’s Zoning and Development Code at and Development Code or contact the City Planning and Development Department at 816-513-1500. Registered outdoor advertising signs information maybe view online by accessing the Online Mapping viewer at
