City Council appoints Douglas Jones as city auditor

The City of Kansas City, Mo., City Council has appointed Douglas Jones, CIA, CGAP, CRMA to the position of city auditor. Jones most recently served as an audit manager in the Kansas City, Mo., City Auditor’s Office. He was selected after a national search yielded a diverse group of highly qualified candidates. Jones replaces Gary White, who retired June 28, 2013.

Jones has worked in the auditing field for almost 25 years, including five years as an auditor and senior auditor with the America West Airlines Internal Audit Department; eight years as an auditor and senior auditor with the Kansas City, Mo., City Auditor’s Office; and five years as the internal auditor for the Kansas City, Mo., Aviation Department, before returning to the City Auditor’s Office as an audit manager in 2007. As city auditor, he is responsible for directing the activities of the City Auditor’s Office, and interacting with and providing information to the mayor, City Council and City departments.

Jones is a certified internal auditor and certified government auditing professional, and he also holds a certification in risk management assurance. He has served on the Board of Directors for the Association of Airport Internal Auditors and the Professional Issues Committee of the Association of Local Government Auditors. Jones holds both a bachelor of business administration degree and master of business administration degree from Wichita State University.

The city auditor is appointed by and reports to the City Council. The City Charter establishes the position of the city auditor as independent of the city manager and responsible only to the Mayor and City Council. The charter grants the city auditor complete access to all the City's books and records. The city auditor uses this access, independence and authority in performing this charter mandate to carry on a continuous investigation of the work of all City departments. The City Council's Finance, Governance and Ethics Committee oversees the activities of the city auditor.
