FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Jan. 31, 2013

City announces streetcar outreach efforts

Initial public engagement activities for the KC Downtown Streetcar were announced today at a meeting of the Kansas City Streetcar Authority Inc., the nonprofit governing body responsible for monitoring the financial progress of the streetcar project. The announcement included information related to the first phase of exploratory drilling, public meetings and engagement and online information resources.

During the week of Feb. 11, 2013, drilling will begin along the route to explore underground conditions so that electric poles can be installed in the future to provide power to the streetcars. Concurrently, TREKK Design Group will begin to locate underground vaults and storage areas that could impact construction. After these efforts are completed, it’s expected that utility relocation will begin in the summer of 2013.

To keep the public informed of project updates and construction, members of the project team will be walking the route during the first week of February to speak with business owners, residents and workers in the area. On Thursday, Feb. 21, a public meeting will be held at Kansas City’s Union Station from 4 to 7 p.m. to give project updates.

In addition, an informational website – www.kcstreetcar.org - meant to provide construction and detour updates to the public, was also launched today. The website, which also contains links to the project’s social media resources, will continually be updated to reflect the latest project and construction information.

When completed, the KC Downtown Streetcar line will run from the Kansas City River Market to Crown Center with 18 stops throughout the downtown area. With construction beginning in the summer of 2013, it’s expected that the project will be completed in two years and the streetcar system will be operational in the summer of 2015.

Media inquiries and other requests for more information about this project should be directed to Sean Demory, Public Works Department, at 816-513-0059 or email sean.demory@kcmo.org.
