FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Jan. 24, 2013

Sidewalk construction begins along Holmes Road

The City of Kansas City, Mo., Public Works Department will begin work this week to build a sidewalk along the east side of Holmes Road, from 89th Street to 93rd Street.

The sidewalk project will connect the recently completed sidewalks in front of Center High School to sidewalks south of 93rd Street, and bring the traffic signal at 89th Street and Holmes Road up to federal accessibility standards. The improvement project is funded through the neighborhood portion of the City’s one cent capital improvement sales tax.

“I am excited about this investment in south Kansas City started by Councilman John Sharp and Councilwoman Cathy Jolly in the last council term,” said Sixth District Councilman at Large Scott Taylor. “Not only will this encourage healthy exercise for students and neighbors of Center High School, it also complements the new grocery store that has opened down the street.”

“This will greatly improve the safety of Center students who walk to and from school, as well as the safety of other pedestrians,” said Sixth District Councilman John Sharp. “I’m happy it’s getting underway, and I’ll be even happier when it’s completed.”

Weather permitting, construction signage will be installed and clearing will begin Thursday Jan. 24. Both southbound lanes of Holmes Road will remain open during construction, and northbound Holmes Road will be reduced to one lane during working hours. During limited times when construction work adjacent to the street has not been completed, one northbound lane will remain closed overnight but during the majority of the project, all lanes of Holmes Road will be open before the evening rush hour.

Construction is scheduled for completion in April 2013.

Media inquiries and other requests for more information about this project should be directed to Sean Demory, Public Works Department, at 816-513-0059 or email sean.demory@kcmo.org.
