Community celebrates second phase of Longview improvements

A small group of community members and elected officials celebrated a large investment in southeast Kansas City at a groundbreaking for phase two of the Longview Road improvement project on Dec. 21, 2012.

The fifteen-month project, which will realign and widen Longview Road between Blue Ridge Boulevard and Spring Valley Road, was originally part of a series of improvements promised with a late-1970s bond package for the Truman Sports Complex. Sixth District Councilman John Sharp praised the work of Sixth District Councilman at large Scott Taylor and former Sixth District Councilwoman at large Cathy Jolly in helping revive the project.

“I drive on this street quite a bit, and I see kids and adults walking in the street every day, walking in the mud,” Sharp said. “Now, we’re going to have sidewalks. We’re going to have curbs and gutters and bicycle lanes.

“Our community has waited for this for 45 years,” Sharp said. “Finally, two generations after we originally hoped to see it, we’re getting this done.”

The project is one of a number of improvements built in south Kansas City over the past several years. Sharp said that the completed roadway would help support The Bay, a multi-million dollar water park opened last year on Longview Road, and bring additional investment to the area.

Taylor said the project’s benefit to the area went far beyond its initial utility.

“With this improvement, and the millions of dollars of additional improvements throughout the district, we’re sending a clear message that we are committed to southeast Kansas City,” Taylor said.

Media inquiries and other requests for more information about this project should be directed to Sean Demory, Kansas City Public Works, at 816-513-0059 or sean.demory@kcmo.org
