Open government gains momentum

The City of Kansas City, Mo., City Manager’s Office today announced a new partnership between the City's Open Government Committee and the Helzberg MBA Program at Rockhurst University. This partnership will focus on leveraging a large catalog of city data to promote economic and community development. This diverse collection of raw city data will include everything from building permits to the location of all parking lots in the city.

“By embracing a concept of open government, which offers greater public access to data, we will provide information that can facilitate entrepreneurial ideas and possibilities,” said City Manager Troy Schulte. “This information has been created through public funding and belongs to the public.”

Working in collaboration with the Open Government Committee, the Rockhurst MBA team will assist in the implementation of a data catalog. This web resource will allow entrepreneurs and community leaders to gain access to city data. Implementing a data catalog is a first step in having data available to create “apps.” The catalog will also be a key element in the ongoing effort to create greater transparency in the overall processes of city government. The catalog is expected to be available to the public in December of 2012.
