Health Department temporarily cuts price of shingles vaccine

The City of Kansas City, Mo., Health Department is making a limited supply of varicella zoster or shingles vaccine available at a discounted price. The vaccination is available at the Health Department’s Adult and Travel Immunization Clinic, 2400 Troost Ave.

While current supplies last, those age 60 years and older may purchase the shingles vaccine for $100 at the department’s clinic. The Health Department normally offers this vaccine for $190. Those interested in getting the vaccine should consult with their insurance provider about possible reimbursement for the fee. The Health Department does not bill third party providers.

“Though the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended this vaccine for everyone 60-years-old and older, the cost of the vaccine has discouraged many from getting it,” said Ron Griffin, manager of the Division of Communicable Disease Prevention and Public Health Preparedness. “We are temporarily cutting the price of the vaccine we currently have in stock to encourage people to come out and get vaccinated against this potentially very painful illness.”

The shingles vaccine is typically one of the most expensive vaccines available, but only one shot is required.
