A.B.O.P.T collection event scheduled for June 30
City of Kansas City, Mo., residents may safely and sustainably recycle their household hazardous waste, unwanted confidential documents, leaves and brush at the A.B.O.P.T (Antifreeze, Batteries, Oil, Paint and Tire) Collection Event on Saturday, June 30 from 8 a.m. to noon outside the Old Theatre, 220 N.W. Metro North Drive, behind Metro North Mall.
Please enter from Barry Road and Northwest 85th Terrace onto Metro North Drive.
The City will collect and safely dispose of antifreeze; car and household batteries; oil (automotive, cooking, heating, etc.); paint; paint-related chemicals, such as strippers, thinners and varnishes; and tires (with or without rims).
Residents may bring their unwanted confidential documents to the onsite Proshred Mobile Shredding Truck for secure shredding and disposal. Proshred will accept all types of paper, including those with staples, paper clips, three ring binders, spiral notebooks and most office materials. Residents can watch their materials be shredded to make certain their secure disposal. All materials shredded will be recycled.
A leaf and brush dumpster will be onsite for residents to dispose their leaves, yard waste, brush and tree trimmings. All items must be in paper bags, not plastic.
Please note: leaf and brush drop-off and tire recycling will be available for only City of Kansas City, Mo., residents with proof of residency. Antifreeze, battery, oil and paint recycling and paper shredding will be available to residents of both Kansas City, Mo., and Smithville, Mo., with proof of residency.
Space is limited to the first 700 vehicles that arrive. Trash and electronics will not be collected at this event.
This event is sponsored by the City of Kansas City, Mo., in partnership with Northland Neighborhoods, Inc.; the City of Smithville, Mo.; MD Management; and Metro North Mall.
Residents may also drop off their household hazardous waste year-round at the City’s Household Hazardous Waste Facility, 4707 Deramus Ave. This facility is open Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Throughout the year, the City hosts several other recycling events, including an electronic recycling event held on Saturday, April 14, 2012, during which 16,814 pounds of electronics were recycled. The City also hosted a plastic recycling event on April 20, 2012. About 1,250 residents and City employees brought thousands of used plastic bags to City Hall, the Water Services, Health and Aviation departments, and the City’s recycling centers in exchange for a free, reusable shopping bag. In addition, the City’s Solid Waste Division and Water Services Laboratory Services held plastic bag collections for their employees. 278 pounds or approximately 14,632 plastic bags were collected over a four-hour period.
