Students at Dobbs Elementary build a city of their own

The City of Kansas City, Mo., Active Living KC initiative has partnered with Dobbs Elementary School’s Coyita Miller to help her fourth grade summer school students create their own city. Using the Metropolis: A Green City of Your Own curriculum, students will spend one week learning the different parts of a city and will then apply their new knowledge to build a city of their own, called “Box City”.

The Metropolis curriculum was developed in 2008 by urban planner turned third grade teacher, John Martoni. The curriculum teaches students to recognize problems in a community and to creative positive solutions. The curriculum’s lessons include environmental sustainability, transportation, public spaces, landmarks and more. Metropolis uses mathematics, social studies, art, science and health to teach children about new community development. The students will then apply the skills acquired in the program and will build their own ideal cities.

The Box City created by the students will be on display beginning Friday, June 29 at the Blue Ridge Branch of the Mid-Continent Public Library located at 9253 Blue Ridge Blvd.

The program is organized by Active Living KC, an initiative of the City of Kansas City, Mo., and Dobbs Elementary of the Hickman Mills School District. Active Living KC has been working with the Hickman Mills School District to improve conditions for walking and biking to school. Through the Metropolis curriculum, Active Living KC hopes to teach the students about the importance of the built environment on their ability to have an active lifestyle. Funding for Active Living KC has been provided in part by the Health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City.
