Grand opening celebration for Eastwood Hills Community Garden planned for June 19

The City of Kansas City, Mo., in partnership with Kansas City Community Gardens, invites residents to attend the grand opening of the Eastwood Hills Community Garden, 8100 Ozark Road, on Tuesday, June 19 at 11 a.m.

Located on the former site of the Municipal Corrections Institution, this new community garden holds 58 ground plots (20’x25’) and 48 raised beds (4’x12’). Community members may rent garden plots to grow their own fruits and vegetables.

“We’re excited to open the Eastwood Hills Community Garden to the community,” said Mayor Pro Tem Cindy Circo. “Community gardens not only provide residents in urban food deserts with access to fresh, healthy foods at an affordable price, but also help build and create relationships and friendships among participating community members.”

This grand opening event will feature remarks by Mayor Pro Tem Cindy Circo, Councilman Jermaine Reed, Kansas City Community Gardens Executive Director Ben Sharda and other community members. It will be followed by an open house of the garden led by Eastwood Hills community gardeners. Refreshments will be served.

“The Eastwood Hills Community Garden is a great example of the City’s effort to support community gardens,” said Councilman Jermaine Reed. “As community gardens increase in popularity, residents will be pleased to know of other opportunities on City property, such as the gardens at Swope Park at 6917 Kensington Ave. and Freeway Park at 14th and Indiana streets. There are also hundreds of smaller community gardens used by neighborhood groups and individuals.”

Residents interested in starting a community garden or renting a garden plot at Eastwood Hills Community Garden or another local public community garden may call Kansas City Community Gardens at 816-931-3877 or visit www.kccg.org.
