Parks and Health departments urge “sun-sense” for the pool season

This Memorial Day weekend marks the opening of pool season and the City of Kansas City, Mo., Parks and Recreation Department and Health Department encourage residents to use their ”sun-sense” to prevent sunburns.

“With the opening of our spraygrounds, major pools and new south Kansas City water park, The Bay, we want to remind all residents to use sunscreen properly and often,” said Parks and Recreation Deputy Director Steve Lampone. “Whether it is sunny or cloudy, everyone should protect against feeling the burn as people of all colors can get skin cancer.”

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends the following sun-sense tips to protect yourself from sun exposure this summer:

- Use a “broad-spectrum” sunscreen that protects against UVA and UVB rays of the sun. Sunscreen should also be water-resistant

with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 30 or greater.

-

Generously coat all skin that will be exposed 15 minutes BEFORE setting out for your outside adventures.Use a lip balm or lipstick that contains SPF 30 sunscreen.

- Re-apply sunscreen every two hours or every 40-80 minutes when swimming or sweating heavily.

- Don’t be afraid to take shade breaks - Especially when the sun’s rays are strongest, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

For more information on sunscreens, prevention of sun damage and taking care of sunburns, visit the American Academy of Dermatology, www.aad.org.
