Burke Elementary celebrates inaugural National Bike to School Day on May 10

The City of Kansas City, Mo.’s Active Living KC initiative, Burke Elementary School, the Hickman Mills School District and LINC will join schools from around the country to celebrate National Bike to School Day on Thursday, May 10.

Approximately 100 students will ride or walk to school with parents, teachers and community leaders. The event will begin at 7:30 a.m., with groups departing from three locations: the Ruskin Heights Shops (Blue Ridge Boulevard and East Red Bridge Road); Hickman Mills Drive and East 113th Street; and Bennington Avenue and East 110th Street. Bicyclists and walkers will arrive at the school at 8 a.m. Other special activities associated with the event include “Bonding and Bagels,” a breakfast for families who walk and bike to school that morning. “Bonding and Bagels” and National Bike to School Day will give families a chance to spend quality time together before the start of the school day.

Active Living KC also participated in a National Bike to School Day event on May 8 with Dobbs Elementary School.

This year marks the first-ever National Bike to School Day. This event encourages a nationwide bike-focused celebration for students in the month of May and builds on the popularity and success of Walk to School Day, which is celebrated across the country – and the world – each October.

Bike to School Day events raise awareness of the need to create safer routes for bicycling and walking and emphasize the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, reducing traffic congestion and concern for the environment. The events build connections among families, schools and the broader community.

The event is organized by Active Living KC, with support from LINC and the Hickman Mills School District. Active Living KC has been working with the Hickman Mills School District to improve conditions for walking and biking to school. This includes the installation of a bike rack at all eight Hickman Mills elementary schools.
