City street closures for Big 12 Basketball

Public advised to read parking rates and keep valuables out of sight

The City of Kansas City, Mo. will host the Phillips 66 Big 12 Basketball Championships, March 7-11. During this time, motorists can anticipate street closures near Sprint Center to help facilitate the event.

Truman Road will have two lanes closed from Oak Street to Grand Boulevard, leaving one lane open. Grand Boulevard will be closed between 13th Street and Truman Road. 14th Street will be closed inside the Kansas City Power & Light District, between Walnut Street and Grand Boulevard. The Championship games for the men’s teams will be played at Sprint Center, while Championship games for the women’s teams will be played at Municipal Auditorium. Game schedules can be found at

Individuals planning to attend the Championships are advised to show up early to offset delays created by increased traffic and parking demand. Plenty of parking is available within comfortable walking distance to the Sprint Center.

Municipal garages charge $10 for event parking. As these facilities fill and motorists seek parking alternatives, it is important that public be aware of posted signs at commercial parking lots and make certain pricing and terms are understood before parking vehicles.

As with any event, motorists parking vehicles downtown during the Championships are advised that it is always prudent to keep valuables out of plain sight when leaving a parked vehicle. Items such as GPS, laptops, cell phones, audio devices, purses and sunglasses are a temptation for thieves seeking an easy opportunity.

The Championships are estimated to have a $14 million impact on the local economy.
