Spring thaw causes water variances, quality remains unchanged

The City of Kansas City, Mo., Water Services Department is alerting residents that the annual spring thaw can alter the taste, color and odor of drinking water, but the quality remains unchanged.

“These variations in no way indicate any need for concern about the safety of our drinking water quality," said Lorene Lindsay, laboratory manager for the Water Services Department. “Each spring, the Missouri River rises due to large amounts of snow melt and spring rainfall from upstream. This "softer" water has now reached the Kansas City area.”

The department performs extensive testing every day at the treatment plant and throughout the distribution system that includes taste, color and odor monitoring. The water purification process has the flexibility to adjust to changing river conditions by adding chemicals to reduce taste, color and odor levels. However, some customers may notice changes in taste, color and odor that can last from one day to more than a week.
