FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Feb. 3, 2009

Committee to hear presentation on new crime deterrent technology

The City of Kansas City, Mo., Public Safety and Neighborhoods Committee will hear a presentation on the ShotSpotter Gun Location System at its Feb. 4 meeting. The meeting will be held at 10 a.m. on the 26th floor of City Hall, 414 E. 12th St.

According to ShotSpotter Inc., the system detects, classifies, locates and alerts first responders to gun fire and other explosive events in near real-time. Each event is logged into a historical database for strategic and tactical crime analysis that reveals crime trends, patterns and hot spots within a coverage area.

City Councilwoman Cathy Jolly, 6th District at large, and chairwoman of the committee, along with two members of Mayor Mark Funkhouser’s staff recently went to St. Louis, which has the system installed, to view it and learn more about the system.

The presentation will give committee members, City staff and residents further information to determine if the system is a good fit for the city. The Police Department has begun the initial steps to acquire federal funding for the system if the City decides to move forward.

For more information, contact Dyanne Bean, aide to Councilwoman Jolly, at (816) 513-1602.
