Community celebrates Red Bridge lighting

City of Kansas City, Mo., residents and community leaders gathered Wednesday, Dec. 28 to celebrate the newly constructed bridge over the Blue River on Red Bridge Road. This construction replaced a decades-old narrow bridge and is the latest milestone along that historic roadway.

After brief comments from Sixth District Councilman John Sharp and Sixth District Councilman at large Scott Taylor, a group of area residents, including several Red Bridge Elementary School children, began a countdown that ended with switching on low level red LED lights that illuminated the new structure.

“This bridge is a huge improvement to public safety,” Councilman Sharp said. “The frequent lengthy delays of emergency vehicles caused by the at-grade railroad crossing and the periodic road closings due to flooding are now behind us,

and I have appreciated everyone’s support during the efforts to bring this project closer to completion.”

Councilman Taylor echoed Councilman Sharp’s thoughts, noting the bridge’s role in south Kansas City’s history.

“This crossing has been a vital part of the community’s transit history since the settlement of the area,” Councilman Taylor said. “The new bridge will be used by future generations of families for walking, bicycling and learning about our heritage as we add historical enhancements.”

The 18-month construction project improves Red Bridge Road between Holmes Road and Blue River Road, adding curbs, sidewalks and other amenities to the south Kansas City arterial. In addition, the project replaced the current Red Bridge over the Blue River with a new structure more suited to the traffic needs of the area while giving the old bridge new life as part of Minor Park’s trail.

Although major construction is complete, motorists will see intermittent lane restrictions in order to install decorative engravings of travelers and area residents from the 1800s on the bridge.

Media inquiries and other requests for more information about the Red Bridge Road construction project should be directed to Sean Demory, Capital Projects Department, at 816-513-0059.
