City celebrates Maplewoods Parkway reopening
City of Kansas City, Mo. elected officials and local leaders celebrated the completion of major construction on Maplewoods Parkway today, Friday, Dec. 17 at 8 a.m. The event was held on Maplewoods Parkway, between Barry Road and Missouri Highway 152.
City Council and Parks Board members gave brief remarks prior to the roadway’s opening.
"The completion of this section of Maplewoods Parkway brings the total miles of parkway in the City's Northland to about 13 miles," said John Fierro, President of the City's Parks and Recreation Commissioners. "Our parkway and boulevard system has historically served as a stimulus for economic development and growth, as it contributes to the quality of life in our City."
The construction on Maplewoods Parkway between Barry Road and Missouri Highway 152 included two bridges, new roadway and a striking retaining wall designed to represent natural rock. This work was managed by the City’s Capital Projects Office for the City of Kansas City, Mo., Parks and Recreation Department.
Elected officials noted the importance of this and other road improvements to the continued development and expansion of the City's northern districts.
"Kansas City North has grown by 66,000 people in the last decade," said 2nd District Councilman at large Ed Ford. "That couldn't have happened without the infrastructure."
Media inquiries and other requests for more information about the Maplewoods Parkway project should be directed to Sean Demory, Capital Projects Office, at 816-513-0059.
