Councilwoman Marcason calls for traffic and parking study on Country Club Plaza
City of Kansas City, Mo., Councilwoman Jan Marcason, 4th District, has asked the city manager for an updated traffic and parking study on the Country Club Plaza in connection with a proposed new office building at Highwoods Properties, 47th and Broadway streets.
In a Nov. 15 memo to Tom Coyle, director of Planning, and Troy Schulte, acting city manager, Marcason outlined her reasons for this request. She expressed concern that adding a new office building may negatively affect traffic flow and parking availability. She believes that conducting a comprehensive parking inventory and traffic study may provide insight on the project’s feasibility.
“These two studies will be critical to the City Council for making an informed decision on the proposed Highwoods property,” Marcason said. “Even with the architectural modifications to comply with the Plaza Plan, we need to make sure that the implications of this office building on the Plaza are fully considered.”
According to Marcason, Highwoods Properties intends to present modifications to its office building plan to the City in late December. She requested the studies to be completed before the City Plan Commission deliberates the merits of this project.
“I want every issue addressed as the process moves forward. The City Council and the people who are passionate about the Plaza need to have answers to the questions that have been raised,” Marcason said.
