Municipal Court employee receives
“AWL Woman of the Year” award
Tamara Marler, administrative assistant to the judges at the City of Kansas City, Mo. Municipal Court, has been named Woman of the Year by the Association for Women Lawyers (AWL) of Greater Kansas City.
This highly prestigious award is given annually to one woman in the Kansas City metropolitan area (including Kansas) who has contributed significantly to the legal profession, the advancement of women and the community in general.
Among numerous other achievements, Marler is being honored for her role as coordinator of the Municipal Court’s Step Up for Women in Shelter program. Through this program, hundreds of women in transitional living and domestic abuse shelters who could not otherwise afford an attorney have been able to receive pro bono representation by volunteer attorneys from AWL.
“By disposing of their outstanding warrants and charges in exchange for community service, it is hoped that the women helped by this program have been able to turn their lives around,” said Presiding Judge Katherine Bromfield Emke. “Ms. Marler has done an exceptional job in coordinating this program. My colleagues on the bench and I are excited and proud that she is receiving this award. It’s an honor she richly deserves.”
AWL will present the award to Marler at a recognition ceremony during the organization’s annual meeting on Dec. 14. Judges, local dignitaries, community leaders, politicians, attorneys and several members of the Municipal Court senior management staff will attend.
