Ribbon-cutting ceremony for new jazz district terrace to be Dec. 2

The City of Kansas City, Mo., Capital Improvements Management Office, a division of the City Manager’s Office, will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony Tuesday, Dec. 2 to celebrate the completion of a gateway terrace in the historic 18th & Vine Jazz Heritage District. The ceremony will be held at 4:30 p.m. at the corner of 18th Street and The Paseo.

“I am pleased with the rapid completion of the gateway terrace project,” said Councilwoman Sharon Sanders Brooks, 3rd District. “The terrace will visually enhance the ever-changing 18th & Vine Jazz Heritage District.”

The project links the jazz district to other are attractions, including the Gregg/Klice Community Center and the Black Archives of mid-America Inc. The terrace features a stage area, seating, a pergola and landscaping that includes two rain gardens to will help collect stormwater runoff. The terrace provides an open and inviting space for people to gather, and will serve as a landmark for those visiting the area.

“I am excited about the progress and continued improvements being made in this historic area of Kansas City,” said City Councilwoman Melba Curls, 3rd District at large. “Visitors and residents alike will be quite impressed with this new addition.”

The gateway terrace represents one of several projects recently completed or underway in the district. In addition to the terrace, a new parking lot was built on the southwest corner of 18th Street and The Paseo, new streetlights will be installed along 17th Terrace, a rooftop sign will be installed on top of a building adjacent to the new terrace and several retail buildings along 18th Street are being enhanced in order to make the spaces available to new tenants.
