Health Department to hold special HIV testing clinic for World AIDS Day

The City of Kansas City, Mo., Health Department will commemorate World AIDS Day on Dec. 1 with walk-in, confidential, free AIDS testing from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. in a private, screened area of the Health Department's atrium, 2400 Troost Ave.

"World AIDS Day is an important opportunity to raise awareness that early detection of HIV is critical to maintaining good health. If you are at risk, getting tested is the only way to know your status,” said Councilman Terry Riley, 5th District, co-chair of the Kansas City Health Commission’s Minority Health and Health Equity Committee.

"People who are sexually active and are not in monogamous relationships should be tested regularly for HIV," said Ron Griffin, manager of the Communicable Disease Prevention and Public Health Preparedness Division. "Knowing your status is the key in preventing the spread of this disease."

"Our goal is for people to get tested. If they test positive for HIV, then we want to help them get treatment," said Samantha Hughes, the Health Department's HIV Prevention and Planning Council Support manager.

Free testing for HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases is regularly available at the Health Department by appointment Monday through Friday. Walk-ins are accepted, but appointments are preferred and will shorten wait times. To schedule an appointment, call (816) 513-6379.

For more information about the special clinic, call the Health Department, (816) 513-6008.

Media inquiries about this topic should be directed to Jeff Hershberger, public information officer for the Health Department, (816) 840-2548 (pager).
