KCI Airport passenger traffic up 1 percent in October

The City of Kansas City, Mo., Aviation Department reports that Kansas City International Airport recorded 870,235 passengers arriving and departing through its gates in October, which represents an increase of 1 percent from October 2008. Passenger boardings at KCI were down 0.8 percent, with a total of 436,641 during October. Year-to-date boardings at KCI totaled 4,105,168, a decrease of 10.9 percent from the same period last year.

The number of peak-day scheduled aircraft departures for October was 199. Service was offered to 49 nonstop markets. There was an average of 38,882 arriving and departing seats available in the market each day, down 1.9 percent from last year.

“October marks the second consecutive month of traffic improvement at KCI,” said Director of Aviation Mark VanLoh. “Airlines find the operating costs at KCI to be some of the lowest in the nation and pass those savings on to their Kansas City customers. Fares at KCI continue to be lower than Des Moines, Manhattan, Omaha and St. Louis.”

Air cargo tonnages, which consist of both freight and mail transported by air, for all carriers at KCI were down 17.7 percent in October. Year-to-date air cargo at KCI was down 24.3 percent from the same period last year. Air freight handled at KCI during October amounted to more than 16 million pounds, which represents a year-over-year decrease of 17.2 percent. Air mail for October was down 27.6 percent from October 2008. The all-cargo carriers reported four daily departures for October.
