City receives Office on Violence Against Women grant
The City of Kansas City, Mo., Prosecutor's Office is pleased to announce that the City of Kansas City Mo., Municipal Court, in partnership with the City’s Domestic Violence Court; the City’s Domestic Violence Victims Assistance Program; the Rose Brooks Center; the Jackson County Safe Family Coalition; and the Resource Development Institute, has received a Department of Justice, Office on Violence Against Women grant award valued at $230,409.
The grant will fund a court training and improvement program created by the Violence Against Women Act of 2005 (VAWA). The Department of Justice, Office on Violence Against Women recognizes that judicial education and specialized court processes play an integral role in effective responses to crimes of sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence and stalking.
"The Kansas City Municipal Court should be congratulated for its many efforts on behalf of domestic violence victims," said Mayor Mark Funkhouser. "This grant award will help fund positions and programs designed to reduce domestic violence in Kansas City."
The goals of the 36 month project are:
To enhance collaboration with law enforcement; other court jurisdictions; and probation, parole and batterer intervention treatment providers to ensure offender accountability.
To develop a system to ensure offender accountability and enhanced victim safety by creating a coordinated system for tracking the most violent offenders.
To work toward a specialized domestic violence court model for the entire Kansas City region by developing a community-based coordinating committee.
The project involves hiring an Offender Accountability Coordinator for the Domestic Violence Court who will develop a practice within multiple jurisdictions to ensure offender accountability and enhanced victim safety by creating a coordinated system for tracking the most violent domestic violence offenders. The project costs are salary, benefits, supplies, travel and technical assistance. The total amount budgeted for the project is $230,409.
