U.S. flags at half-staff in honor of Rosa Parks
City Manager Wayne A. Cauthen has ordered all U.S. flags at City facilities to be flown at half-staff in remembrance of civil rights activist Rosa Parks. The flags will remain at half-staff until sunset of the day she is laid to rest.
Parks died Monday at the age of 92, weeks before the 50th anniversary of her 1955 arrest for refusing to give up her seat on a Montgomery, Ala., bus. The event launched a new era in the civil rights movement and led to a 1956 Supreme Court decision that said discrimination in public transportation was unconstitutional.
The movement culminated in the 1964 federal Civil Rights Act, which banned racial discrimination in public accommodations.
