City suspends Skybox’s liquor license

The City of Kansas City, Mo., Regulated Industries Division and Skybox management have agreed to a voluntary 21-day suspension of the establishment’s liquor license due to violations of City ordinances. Skybox is located at 105 E. 5th St., and the suspension will be served from Oct. 26 through Nov. 16.

"This voluntary 21-day suspension of the Skybox’s liquor license is coming after a shooting, several assaults and several large-scale disturbances that have occurred on their premises. The River Market community has voiced its concerns about the Skybox, as has the Police Department," said Gary Majors, manager of the Regulated Industries Division of the Neighborhood and Community Services Department.

As a result of these violations, Skybox no longer will have live music and stage shows as forms of entertainment; the City revoked Skybox’s license for these forms of entertainment. Any further violation of the ordinance could result in the revocation of the establishment's liquor license.

The Regulated Industries Division cited Skybox with multiple violations of these sections of the City ordinance:

• Section 10-36(a)(1) -- A licensee or permittee under this chapter has not at all times maintained an orderly place
• Section 10-36(a)(2) -- The licensee or any employee, agent or servant of the licensee has violated any of the provisions of this chapter
• Section 10-36(a)(6) -- Anything has occurred which would render the licensee or permittee or licensed premises ineligible or unsuitable for a license or permit under the provisions of this chapter
• Section 10-261(f)(4) -- Whether crimes or City ordinance violations have been committed upon or in the immediate vicinity of the licensed premises by persons frequenting the premises or by the licensee or his employees, servants or agents
• Section 10-261(f)(5) -- The frequency of disturbances or other incidents upon or in the immediate vicinity of the licensed premises by persons frequenting the premises that have required police presence, response, investigation or other action
• Section 10-261(f)(7) -- Whether the type of entertainment approved by the licensed premises has been detrimental to the locality involved, and, if any renewal application proposes to change the type of entertainment for the premises, whether the proposed entertainment would be compatible with or detrimental to the locality involved, considering those other factors delineated in section 10-241.

Media inquiries about this issue should be directed to Teresa L. Clark, public information officer for the Neighborhood and Community Services Department, (816) 513-3247.
