Open houses scheduled to present Major Street Plan update

The City of Kansas City, Mo. will host three open houses to present an update of the City’s Major Street Plan. The Plan defines Kansas City’s major street network and locations where potential upgrades should occur. This update outlines future roadways and integrates them with surrounding land uses to facilitate future development goals and community needs.

Residents and community members are encouraged to attend to provide input on the plan.

The open houses will be held at the following:

Monday, Nov. 1, 5-7 p.m., Penn Valley Community College’s Education Center Room 19

3201 Southwest Trafficway

Thursday, Nov. 4, 5-7 p.m., Hillcrest Community Center, 10401 Hillcrest Road

Tuesday, Nov. 9, 5-7 p.m., Ambassador Building, 12200 NW Ambassador Drive

A series of exhibits describing the Plan and the City’s future street network will be available for review at each location. Short presentations will be given at 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. Those unable to attend may access an online interactive tool regarding the Plan anytime from Nov. 1-14 by visiting the City’s Public Works website: www.kcmo.org/CKCMO/Depts/PublicWorks.

Since 2008, three City Departments - City Planning and Development; Parks and Recreation; and Public Works - have worked together to update the City’s Major Street Plan.

The new Plan supports the idea of “Complete Streets,” providing bicycle, pedestrian and transit accommodations. It also recommends right-of-way enhancements, such as landscaped medians, improving the overall look of our streets. For certain streets, the Plan proposes “road diets,” which reduce the number of necessary lanes or right-of-way width.

The Plan’s developers also created a dynamic travel demand model to forecast future infrastructure needs, such as the number of lanes on a street necessary to handle forecasted demand.

The open house will allow the public to provide valuable feedback that City staff can use to fine-tune the travel demand model. Public comments will also be used to help inform the Plan’s implementation.

Any person with a disability who desires reasonable accommodation to attend this meeting may contact the City’s 311 Action Center at 311 or 816-513-1313, or for TTY, 816-513-1889, or by e-mail at actioncenter@kcmo.org.
