City’s art scene touted in national publication

The City of Kansas City, Mo., One Percent for Art program along with the city’s overall art scene was recognized in the October issue of “Art in America,” one of the nation’s most prestigious art magazines. The article says the city’s art scene is “…helping turn this heartland city into a culture hub.”

The six-page spread features photographs of artworks from the city’s public art collection, the new Bloch Building at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and several other public and privately-funded art exhibits.

“This article confirms the city’s place in the national art world and reminds us that the arts are integral to our regional economic development and unique quality of life,” said Porter Arneill, administrator of the Municipal Art Commission.

The article highlights the City’s Avenue of the Arts and Art in the Loop programs, the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art, the Charlotte Street Foundation, the Kansas City Art Institute and several area galleries.

The Municipal Art Commission oversees the One Percent for Art Program, which sets aside one percent of the construction budget for new and renovated municipal buildings for public art. The Avenue of the Arts program is an annual summer exhibition of temporary public artwork created by regional artists administered through a partnership with the Municipal Art Commission and private donors. The Art in the Loop program is a privately funded partnership initiative, which commissions public artwork by graduates or faculty of the Kansas City Art Institute for placement in the downtown loop.

Media inquiries about this issue should be directed to Deanna Nelson, communications specialist in the Capital Improvements Management Office, at (816) 513-2757 or Elizabeth Bowman, with the Municipal Art Commission, at (816) 513-2656.
